History

The history of Tuckers Maltings dates back to 1898 when Parnell Tucker, the son of Edwin Tucker, made the decision to establish a new Malthouse next to Newton Abbot Railway station. The construction of this new facility commenced in January 1900, and it was designed to be a remarkable 60 quarter Malthouse, complete with two germinating floors, production machinery, and two kilns. This ambitious project was a testament to the Tucker family's dedication to innovation and progress.

On Monday, the 5th of November 1900, Tuckers Maltings officially opened its doors for business, having been completed at a cost of £8,000. The facility quickly became a central hub for the malting industry in the region, providing quality malt for various businesses.

Not content to rest on their laurels, the Tuckers continued to expand their operations. Between December 1901 and November 1903, they added a further 50 quarter Malthouse to the complex, featuring three germinating floors and two additional kilns. This expansion solidified Tuckers Maltings' position as a prominent player in the industry.

Parnell Tucker's forward-thinking approach ensured that much of the original machinery and malting methods from 1900 continued to be utilised for over 118 years, a remarkable testament to the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations. Tuckers Maltings remained a vital part of the community, contributing to the local economy and preserving a piece of history through its traditional malting processes.

However, as the demands of the industry changed over the years, the production of malt at Tuckers Maltings eventually ceased in October 2018. The closing of the malting operation marked the end of an era but also marked the beginning of a new chapter for the historic site.

In 2022, part of the original Tuckers Maltings building found new owners who recognised the historical significance of the site. The new owners embarked on an ambitious restoration project to preserve the architectural and cultural heritage of the Maltings. Through their efforts, they transformed part of the iconic building into what is now known as Tuckers Maltings Self Storage.

Today, the Tuckers Maltings Self Storage facility stands as a unique blend of history and modern utility. The grand structure that once housed the malting process has been repurposed to offer secure and convenient storage solutions for the community of Newton Abbot and beyond. By embracing the past while adapting to the needs of the present, Tuckers Maltings Self Storage continues to be a valuable part of the region's history and a testament to the visionary spirit of the Tucker family.
